For the Leader Who's Been Overlooked

You're Not Too Quiet. You're Underestimated.

Half the population is introverted. Only two percent of top leaders are. You’ve been overlooked in meetings, passed over for promotions, and told to “be more confident,” as if confidence were something you could simply turn on. The problem isn’t you. The problem is a workplace built around the extroverted ideal, making you feel like you must change who you are to succeed.

I've Been the Quietest Voice in the Room

For most of my career at Microsoft and American Express, I was the introvert behind the scenes, connecting the dots, resolving issues before they happened, doing the work no one saw. I was overlooked for roles because I didn’t “lead out in front” enough.

What changed wasn’t my personality. It was learning that my quiet, thoughtful nature was the strength, not the obstacle. I learned behaviors to get my voice heard, without changing who I was. I went on to become a General Manager at Microsoft, and have since helped hundreds of introverts get there faster than I did.

LEADERSHIP, ON YOUR TERMS

This Is What Quiet Confidence Looks Like

To have more impact, you don’t have to be louder. You don’t have to change who you are. You can use your strengths in an authentic way, in your voice, at your pace, on your terms.

Imagine walking into the meeting room, confident and sharing your ideas and not letting that idea go wasted when you think of it the next day. Leaving a networking event energized by one deep conversation, not drained by ten shallow ones. Asking for what you want – a promotion, a project, time off.

This is what changes when you lead with quiet confidence.

A Message from Jennifer

I wrote the book, and built this work, for the version of myself who didn’t know what I know now. I want introverts to have an impact sooner than I did. To take bold steps. To ask for the promotion. To set boundaries. To lead in their own quiet way without waiting decades to figure out how. I hope you’ll join me on this journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Jennifer combines three things rarely found together: 30 years of senior corporate leadership as an introvert at Microsoft and American Express, including General Manager and Vice President roles, a Professional Coach Certification (PCC) from the International Coach Federation, and a research-backed methodology built specifically for introverts. She has coached hundreds of introverted professionals at Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, Oracle, and other top firms. Her work is grounded in the trademarked Lead with Quiet Confidence® framework, which emphasizes practical behavior change rather than personality change.

Jennifer’s clients are accomplished introverted professionals, typically mid-level to senior, often in tech, STEM, and analytical industries at established companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta. Many are new people leaders, experienced individual contributors preparing for their next step, or senior leaders ready to refine their executive presence. The common thread is high performers who have been told they need to “be more confident” or “speak up more” and want a path forward that does not require pretending to be something they are not.

Most leadership advice for introverts focuses on the psychology of introversion or uses extroverted ideals in telling introverts to “be more confident.” Lead with Quiet Confidence is a practical, behavior-change framework that feels authentic to who you are. It helps you understand your brain is different and helps you appreciate your strengths as an introvert. It gives you specific tools for speaking up, building executive presence, being visible, influencing, networking, and managing your energy without pretending to be an extrovert.

Introversion is a personality trait defined by where you get your energy. If you get your energy from being alone, you are an introvert. If you get your energy from being with other people, you are an extrovert. The reality is we are all a little of both, ambiverts, depending on the situation, but we tend to have a preference toward one vs the other.

No, and biologically you can’t. Introvert and extrovert preferences are wired into how the brain processes stimulation, and that wiring does not change. What does change is behavior. Introverts can build executive presence, speak up effectively, and influence others while remaining authentically themselves. Change behaviors, not who you are.

Introverts get their energy by being by themselves. They are deep thinkers, prefer to think before they speak, are great at listening and observing, and prefer calm environments. Extroverts think and speak at the same time and they are energized by being with people. The reason is the introverted brain is different as it has higher stimulation than the extroverted brain so introverts can get overwhelmed with too much stimuli or people. Extroverted brains thrive on dopamine, a neurotransmitter related to reward, so they are rewarded for speaking and interacting with others. Introverts thrive on acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter associated with calming and relaxing, hence the desire for quiet and being alone. Both are normal, but just different.

Introverts succeed at work by building on their wiring, not against it. The Lead with Quiet Confidence® framework follows three steps: Awareness (recognizing your introvert strengths), Confidence (building it from the inside, not waiting for it from external feedback), and Behaviors (learning specific actions like speaking up, being visible, and managing energy without becoming someone you are not). Confidence is teachable, not unreachable.

Introverts often get overlooked because most workplaces measure leadership by extroverted behaviors: speaking first, networking widely, generating ideas on the spot, dominating meetings. Introverts process internally, prefer depth over breadth, and need time to formulate ideas. These are strengths that do not show up necessarily in those moments but have impact over time. The result is hard work that goes unseen and contributions that never get credited. The fix is not louder behavior. It is strategic actions and visibility.

Yes, and the data is clearer than most workplaces realize. Half the population is introverted, but only two percent of top leaders identify as such. This is not because introverts can’t lead. It is because most workplaces are built around extroverted norms. Introverts bring leadership strengths most teams desperately need: thoughtful decision-making, deep focus, careful listening, and calm under pressure. The work is not to become someone else. It is to learn behaviors that let those strengths be seen. Adam Grant has done research that introverts are stronger leaders when leading proactive, creative teams. Extroverts are better leaders when the team is less proactive and needs direction. Introverts can be great leaders.

Working with Jennifer always starts with awareness: recognizing how introversion shapes your work, your energy, and your visibility. From there, the path depends on what you choose. 1:1 coaching is personalized, exploratory, and built around your specific goals using kind goals and small experiments. The Lead with Quiet Confidence® program is structured group learning with a small cohort. The book is a self-paced practical guide with the same framework. As a keynote speaker, Jennifer helps the entire audience understand how to get the most from the whole team by understanding the differences between introverts and extroverts. All four are research-based, rooted in the same philosophy of leading with your authentic self by changing behaviors, not who you are.
